MotherDuck buys Tower to own its Python pipeline runtime

MotherDuck has acquired Tower, the startup whose managed runtime already ran the data warehouse company's production Python pipelines. It's MotherDuck's first acquisition since the company launched four years ago.

Tower packages Python pipeline code, deploys it, and keeps it running in production, functionality MotherDuck had been renting rather than owning. The startup also built Tower Control, a browser-based agent that turns a plain-language pipeline description into deployed code, taking a request from prompt straight to production without anyone hand-writing the orchestration layer.

MotherDuck became Tower's biggest customer almost immediately after adopting it, according to the companies. That dependency is what pushed the acquisition: MotherDuck concluded a component this central to running customer pipelines reliably couldn't stay outside its own control, whatever the near-term cost of buying the team and code outright.

For a small team building on a managed data warehouse, the read here isn't about MotherDuck specifically. It's a reminder that a vendor's roadmap can shift the moment a piece of your stack becomes someone else's acquisition target, and that outsourcing a genuinely foundational dependency carries a different risk profile than outsourcing a commodity one.
