GitHub Copilot adds Claude Opus 5 for complex agentic coding tasks

GitHub Copilot now offers Claude Opus 5 as a selectable model, aimed specifically at complex, long-running coding tasks that need careful reasoning and reliable execution across multiple steps rather than single-shot completions. In GitHub's own early testing, the model performed well on agentic workflows: making autonomous code changes, verifying its own work against regressions, and coordinating multiple tools without losing track of the task.

The practical detail for a small team evaluating this: it's not available on every plan. Claude Opus 5 ships for Copilot Pro+, Max, Business, and Enterprise users. If you're on the base Pro tier, this specific model isn't part of your plan yet. Organization admins on Business or Enterprise also need to explicitly turn on the Claude Opus 5 policy in Copilot settings before it appears for their developers — it isn't enabled by default at the org level.

For teams already comparing AI coding assistants on cost and capability rather than brand loyalty, this is another data point in an area that changes monthly: which specific model is available inside which tool, on which plan, changes fast enough that a comparison from even a few months ago can be stale.
